I want to share a heartbreaking experience we encountered recently. A caregiver reached out to us regarding a little boy who has been struggling with sadness and depression. His mom is currently in county jail awaiting trial, and his father is serving time in federal prison.

During our conversation, I could hear his cries in the background, pleading, “I want my mom, I want my mom.” It was incredibly touching and challenging to listen to. We kept the call short so the caregiver could tend to him, but I promised to send her some resources and ideas for free activities that might help comfort him. We concluded our call with a heartfelt prayer for the boy and his family, reminding us of the harsh realities many children face.

After the call ended, my daughter overheard our conversation. Since my phone volume was up, she could hear the little boy crying. She innocently asked why he was so upset, and I gently explained that his mom had made a mistake and was now in jail. Her response was simply, “Oh.” A few moments later, she looked up and said, “Dad, let’s send him a Teddy Bear. Everyone loves a Teddy Bear, and that could make him happy.” It was such a sweet idea, and we decided to follow it. A couple of days later, I realized that it would be wonderful to send a Teddy Bear to every child we work with, ensuring they all feel loved and supported.
